What are lip fillers made of?
The vast majority of lip fillers used by reputable practitioners are made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is responsible for skin hydration and volume. HA fillers are safe, effective, and crucially, reversible. If you are unhappy with a result, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve the filler. This is one of the main reasons hyaluronic acid remains the industry standard for lip treatments.
The main lip filler brands — and what makes them different
There are several well-established hyaluronic acid filler brands used across the UK. The most widely used include Juvederm (made by Allergan), Restylane (by Galderma), Belotero (by Merz), and Revolax. Each has different formulations suited to different areas of the face and different treatment goals. For lips specifically, the choice of product affects how the result looks and feels — some products give more projection, others more hydration and softness.

What does a good lip filler result actually look like?
A well-executed lip filler treatment should look like your lips — just better. The goal is balance, symmetry and proportion, not size. The most common mistakes happen when too much product is used in one session, or when the filler is placed incorrectly. We work from a principle of doing less than you think you need, assessing after two weeks, and building gradually. This approach gives you control over the result and avoids the overfilled look that puts many people off the treatment in the first place.
How much filler do lips need?
Most lip filler treatments use between 0.5ml and 1ml of product. For a first treatment or a subtle enhancement, 0.5ml is usually sufficient. 1ml gives a more noticeable result and is better suited to clients who have had filler before or have naturally thin lips and want a more significant change. We always discuss the amount during your consultation and never add more product than agreed on the day without checking with you first.
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip fillers typically last between 6 and 12 months, though this varies between individuals. Lips are a high-movement area, which means filler breaks down faster here than in other parts of the face. Metabolism, lifestyle and the product used all affect how long your results last. We recommend a follow-up appointment at 2 weeks to assess your results, and a top-up when you feel the volume has reduced to a level you are no longer happy with.
